Project for Pride in Living

Project for Pride In Living (PPL) is guided by the principle of "helping people help themselves." PPL is a nonprofit agency helping lower-income individuals and families through the Twin Cities metropolitan area to achieve greater self-sufficiency through housing, employment training, education, and support services.

Program

Client Population

PPL concentrates its efforts in the distressed neighborhoods of the Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area where unemployment levels are especially high. All of the people in PPL-owned and managed buildings are "at-risk" due to the poverty and declining neighborhood conditions they face on a daily basis. Of its total client base, 48% are African-American, 21% are Somalian, 13% are Caucasian, and the remaining 18% is divided between Asians, Latinos, and Native Americans. All are considered low income, defined as having household income at or below 80% of area median income, and more than 60% are families headed by single females.

Impact

PPL has provided new and renovated single and multi-family housing for low-income people as well as those who have experienced chronic homelessness. Since 1972, PPL has developed more than 1,500 housing units in the Twin Cities metro area. PPL has also widened opportunities for economic advancement though their classroom instruction, counseling, and businesses. Resources have been provided for children and teens to help them succeed in school and life, and a broad range of educational services have connected people of all ages providing them with an avenue to become self-sufficient. Each year, 1,350 students are connected to these services. In 2008, 12,511 people were served through PPL's integrated programs.

Story

Project for Pride in Living
When Vincente and Elodia moved to the United States from Mexico, they had dreams of a better life. Once in the US, however, the family found themselves living in a series of small, cramped two-bedroom apartments. With hopes of owning a home of their own, Vincente and Elodia turned to Project for Pride in Living (PPL). PPL was able to help the family secure a home mortgage and now the family enjoys a spacious, four-bedroom home. Full Story
