Local Initiatives Support Corporation

The Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) helps resident-led, community-based development organizations transform distressed communities and neighborhoods into healthy ones; good places to live, do business, work and raise families. By providing capital, technical expertise, training and information, LISC supports the development of local leadership and the creation of affordable housing, commercial, industrial and community facilities, businesses and jobs. We help neighbors build Sustainable Communities.

LISC is dedicated to helping nonprofit community development corporations transform distressed neighborhoods into healthy and sustainable communities of choice and opportunity; good places to work, do business and raise children. LISC mobilizes corporate, government and philanthropic support to provide local community development organizations with: loans, grants and equity investments; local, statewide and national policy support; and technical and management assistance.

Grandparents raising their grandchildren are so common in low-income neighborhoods that community developers are now creating service-enriched housing for that specific population. Grandparent Families Apartment is a good example. The 50-unit apartment building co-developed by West Side Federation for Senior and Supportive Housing and Presbyterian Senior Services, and financed with loans and equity from New York City LISC and LISCís National Equity Fund, provides a broad range of services including tutoring for children and respite care for seniors. Similar projects exist in Boston, MA, Washington, DC, and New Haven, CT. Full Story
