Southern Bancorp Capital Partners is committed to the revitalization of struggling rural communities by promoting comprehensive development - restarting the local economy, rebuilding the civic infrastructure, fostering the emergence of new leadership, addressing health care needs, creating new homeownership and affordable housing opportunities, and supporting quality educational opportunities for residents of all ages.
Southern Bancorp Capital Partners uses two primary methods to achieve its mission of rural revitalization:
- Strategic Community Planning and Implementation - SBCP has
developed a comprehensive, geographically-targeted, bank-centered, rural development strategy that
drives community development. In each target community, Southern builds long term partnerships
with residents, local leaders, the business community, nonprofits, and other stakeholders to
establish community goals, build capacity to achieve them, and maintain momentum until the goals
are achieved and the community begins to turn around.
- Lending and Technical
Assistance - As a certified Community Development Financial Institution, SBCP uses lending to
promote economic and community development in underserved areas. SBCP's lending program is closely
synchronized with the goals, strategies, and geographic focus of SBCP's community development
program. As a consequence, SBCP's lending emphasizes on larger loans that finance high-impact
community facilities that create jobs, promote education, and foster opportunity.
Southern Bancorp Capital Partners promotes community prosperity in targeted struggling rural counties in southern Arkansas and the Delta region of Arkansas and Mississippi. The service area is predominately African American and 100 percent rural.
The Delta represents a multidimensional development challenge - one that is social, as well as economic. Phillips County, Arkansas, where SBCP is headquartered, exemplifies these challenges with a 37% poverty rate, a 49% child poverty rate, $26,261 median household income, and currently fewer than 10% of public school students will graduate from college.
Southern Bancorp Capital Partners uses its innovative rural development strategy to promote community prosperity touching tens of thousands of people and impacting over 1,000 people in truly life-changing ways. Because of SBCP's work,
- Students who thought college was out
of reach are now academically and financially prepared to succeed in college, often as the first in
Young people who could only think of leaving their town are excited about the possibility of staying so that they can seize new economic, cultural, educational, and leadership opportunities.Once struggling Delta towns have new hope for their communities.
Clarendon is a community that faces the challenges of housing shortages, poverty and unemployment typical of many communities in the Arkansas Delta.
