Affordable Homes of South Texas, Inc., (AHSTI) mission is to "enhance the quality of life of eligible families in the Rio Grande Valley and surrounding areas." AHSTI provides affordable housing to low-income, working families who would otherwise not qualify for conventional home financing. AHSTI has assisted over 2,800 families who would not otherwise qualify for conventional home mortgages. AHSTI serves as land developer, general contractor and servicing agent for loans originated by the agency.

low-income families. AHSTI has developed 14 affordable subdivisions and two more are in

rehabilitated 108 homes.

- Financing: AHSTI uses CDBG, HOME and private sector financing
to facilitate the purchase of single-family lots within residential subdivision developments as
well as provide long-term affordable financing for new scattered site construction and

AHSTI serves residents in Hidalgo county and surrounding areas. AHSTI's clientele is comprised of mostly Hispanics/ or Latinos. Presently, AHSTI serves more than1,000 active clients, who are primarily of Mexican descent. During fiscal year 2007-08, the average AHSTI homeowners earned an estimated $21,000 annually, or approximately 40-percent of the area median family income for a family of four. Single-parent households accounted for approximately 46-percent of AHSTI's clients. Information is compiled annually by AHSTI. A 33-year old nonprofit community housing development organization (CHDO), AHSTI has produced over 2,800 new and rehabilitated units, and currently maintains a loan portfolio of over 35 million dollars. During FY07-08, AHSTI assisted one hundred and eight (108) low-income households by providing new construction and financing as well as rehabilitated housing. AHSTI has also developed 14 affordable subdivisions throughout Hidalgo County. AHSTI has two more subdivisions in predevelopment.
Josephina Lopez is a 57 year old mother of two who obtained a white brick, three-bedroom, two-bathroom home through Affordable Homes of South Texas, Inc. After separating from her husband Ms. Lopez lived with family and friends. At one point, she lived in a mobile trailer home with no heat or air conditioning.
Ms. Lopez used her income tax refund for the down payment on her home. As of this past year, she became an official homeowner. When asked about her thoughts about being a home owner Ms. Lopez responds simply by saying, “It’s a blessing,” Full Story
