Calvert Foundation honors Financial Advisors committed to Community Investing
By Calvert Foundation
Eric Smith, of KMS Financial in Seattle and David Dobkin, for Cambridge Investment
Research in Berkeley were added to Calvert Foundation’s hall of fame in this year’s Advisor of
the Year awards presentation. Every year at SRI in the Rockies (www.sriintherockies.com), a
gathering of the socially responsible investing industry, Calvert Foundation recognizes financial
advisors that demonstrate exemplary commitment to Community Investing.
For both Eric and David, community investing is a major part of their business. Each have succeeded
far beyond the Social Investment Forum’s 1% Community Campaign
(www.communityinvest.org/campaign.cfm) which encourages 1% of managed assets to be invested in
lower income communities. The goal of the 1% in Community campaign is to triple the $5 billion
already involved in community investing as of 2000. Such a result would move an additional $10
billion into disadvantaged areas across the nation and around the world. David and Eric are both
members of First Affirmative Financial Network, a nationwide network of investment professionals
dedicated to serving socially conscious investors.
Eric Smith is a Certified Financial
Planner that believes you should invest from the heart but also use your head. Recognizing the
interconnectedness and interdependence in the world his business philosophy seeks to support a
peace economy that values and respects all people and ecological processes.
background in cohousing development, David, a “general practitioner” financial planner, has
contributed to the understanding of real estate issues. He is Treasurer of the Bay Area Social
Investment Forum. David believes incorporating community investing in his client’s portfolios is
fundamental to his business.
Last year’s winners Andy Loving of Just Money
Advisors in Louisville, KY and Kathy Leonard of Leonard Financial in Boulder, CO were
again recognized as Advisors of the year. Both Kathy and Andy continue to lead the way in community
investing. Between the two of them $1.6 million was directed into Calvert Community Investment
Notes last year. Understanding the true power of community investing, Andy stood before a packed
conference room to proclaim, “if only one percent of one’s assets are devoted to community
investment, then one doesn’t understand community investing”.
