Background
KHIC was formed in 1968 to stimulate growth and create employment opportunities
in a nine-county region of Southeastern Kentucky which included the counties
of Bell, Clay, Clinton, Harlan, Jackson, McCreary, Rockcastle, Wayne and
Whitley. Making debt, equity, and near equity investments in Kentucky
businesses, the Kentucky Highlands Investment Corporation provides financing
and technical assistance, two essential components for a successful start-up
company that are often elusive, particularly in a state such as Kentucky.
In 30 years, Kentucky Highlands has helped 140 businesses finance $178
million and create more than 7,900 jobs. Through its philosophy of providing
comprehensive financial and technical assistance and a $40 million venture
capital fund, Kentucky Highlands-invested companies have beaten the odds
and become prosperous.
Social Mission
KHIC's goals are to create good jobs with living wages and benefits for
the low-income residents in its 9 county area as well as to build the
entrepreneurial capacity of the region.
Investment Information
KHIC makes investments in nine southeast Kentucky counties. These counties
include Bell, Clay, Clinton, Harlan, Jackson, McCreary, Rockcastle, Wayne
and Whitley. KHIC invests in companies in all industries and makes investments
as small as $500 and as high as $5 million, though investments most often
fall between $25,000 and $1 million. The Fund invests in businesses at
all stages of development and co-invests when appropriate and possible.
